Sizing Up the Situation

One of the most important concerns and (very) common question when shopping online for plus-size clothing is - "Is it going to fit?" Great question!

Shopping for plus-size fashions online can sometimes be intimidating and even frustrating at times - however - I am here to give you the confidence you need to shop online for clothing - the fact is - if you are not shopping online for cute - unique and trendy plus-size clothing - you are missing out on so much that is available to you - gone are the days of being left with frumpy clothes and having very few choices of style and size.

Shopping online for clothing is fun and exciting - their is so much available to us - without having to jump in the car - pack up the kids - hit the mall and shop at the same ole shops everyone else is shopping at - we have an entirely plus-size mall right at our finger tips - and we can shop in our bunny slippers! - online retailers in the plus-size industry have opened up a whole new world of fashion for us plus-size ladies!

Before you begin your journey shopping online for clothing - the first thing you want to arm yourself with is your personal measurements - It is those measurements that will lead you to a perfect fit - as long as the retailer has provided you with measurements and not just an approximate guide. If measurements are not provided to you in a clear and precise manner - I always suggest - use that browser back button! - because if a retailer has not taken the time to give you something as important as the measurements - imagine what else they have not told you about the garment.

- Measuring Yourself (for blouses and tops) - Let's do this together!
- Grab a cloth measure tape and measure the following three areas:

1) Bust: measure the fullest part of your bust (while wearing a bra).
2) Waist: then - measure at your natural waistline.
3) Hips: and lastly - measure the fullest part of your hips.

Now - depending on how you like your blouses and tops to fit - I usually suggest to add 1"-2" to each one of your measurements for a comfortable fit - or - if you prefer a very loose fit - add 2"-4" to each of your personal measurements.

Write these measurements down and hang onto them - and if you don't want anyone to know your personal measurements - keep it a secret - and here is a little trick -

Write your measurements down somewhere as if it were someones phone number - Here is what I do - taped to my monitor is a little piece of paper - and it reads: Kathy M. 464-2520. Now can you tell that these are measurements? probably not - But it is my measurements: Kathy M. (M. for measurements) and my measurements are: 46 bust - 42 waist - 52 hips - follow your numbers with one zero on the end to give it 7 digits to make it look like a phone number - ok - I know it's silly but who wants their measurements laying around on their desk for everyone to see - you can have that sitting right up on your desk - somewhere near your monitor or by your desk at home or at work and nobody will be the wiser (smiles)

For a more visual assistance - and also to learn how to measure a blouse you have in your closet - in case you don't have a cloth measure tape - we have a handy little measuring guide to help you and it can be found on our website here: Kathy's Measuring Guide

Now that you have your measurements to use as your guide when shopping online - always be sure to locate the merchants measuring chart first and compare your measurements to their chart to see which size is best for you - and you can be confident that when that new package comes in the mail - you can open it up - slip it on - and it's going to fit! How exciting!

Plus-Size and Proud of It

Chloe Marshall of Surrey, England is the first plus-size model in British history to compete in the Miss England final on July 18 - what a role-model she is! - Chloe is beautiful - she is plus-size and proud of it!

"I know I will stand out from them but in a good way," she tells ABC News. "I want to bring plus sizes back and I want to show teenagers that you can be beautiful whatever size you are."

The biggest model the pageant final has seen so far has been a size Large - Chloe is 5' 10" and 176 pounds and very proud of it!

According to her agent - Stevie Walters - Chloe's success has less to do with her size than with her personality. "She is extremely confident," says Walters. "What's great is that Chloe's a very good ambassador for teenagers who otherwise feel that fashion is dictating to them."

"I think this is happening now because people are sick and tired of skinny models," says Walters. "Women aren't that size. So bigger, plus-size girls are coming into the spotlight."

Don't Toss That Top

I received an email last night from a customer - Ilene - She wrote to ask me what she could possibly do to remove an oily grease stain from one of her favorite tops! Great question - So, I wanted to share my answer with you -

When removing greasy oil stains from clothing - the key is to treat it as soon as possible - the quicker the stain gets attention the better the outcome -

First apply a pre-treatment product and let it set for five minutes - once you've done that you can begin any of the following methods below:

One method is to apply an absorbent - such as cornstarch - baby powder - salt or talcum powder - Allow it to sit on the oil stain for one to two minutes and then gently brush it off - For smaller stains - this should work on the first try but if the stain is large or deeply set - continue by placing the stained area of the garment face down on a clean paper towel - then gently blot the back of the stain using a dry cleaning solvent - (found in retail and grocery stores) - If necessary - replace the paper towel - Then once you've done that - you want to spray the stain with your pre-treatment product and wash using the hottest water possible - Be sure to let the garment air dry rather than putting it into the dryer.

Another method that works great is Dawn dish soap - which is designed specifically for oil and grease - Simply apply several drops to the stain and let it stand for a few minutes - Then use a paper towel to blot the stain - Again - Be sure to let the garment air dry.

And lastly - Lighter fluid also works well - but make sure it is not butane - Drop the fluid directly onto the stain - Let it stand for one minute - Then fill your sink with soapy water using Dawn dish soap - Let soak for about five minutes - Wash the garment out by hand - Rinse in warm water and if necessary - repeat - And let the garment air dry.

What's Your Signature Color

I love those fun online quizzes - and I stumbled across a really cute one called What's Your Signature Color? So - I just had to take the quiz! - It was alot of fun - come to find out - my signature color is: Pink Chiffon - Here is what my results were:

"Kathy, your signature color is Pink Chiffon:

There's nothing saccharine about you — your sweetness is one hundred percent natural! A gentle, thoughtful romantic like you must be paired with a color that's soft and warm — but still has a subtle sophisticated sheen. That's why Pink Chiffon is the perfect color for you! You're probably known for making the most of every situation and trying to see the best in people. But while you may be cheerful and innocent at times, you're nobody's fool. You may see the world through rose-colored glasses, but you can still see, after all.

While you make wise insights time after time, it's probably your good nature and perpetual optimism that are what you're known for and what make you a joy to be around. Even those who sometimes make fun of your Pollyanna-like proclamations will turn to you when they need a friend and some cheering up. So keep pink, Chiffon. With you around, the world's a better place!"

Give it a whirl - It's alot of fun! Here is the quiz: What's Your Signature Color

Bring on the Sunshine

Oh glorious sunshine - Shine your rays on me! It's beginning to look alot like Spring here in the beautiful Northeast - With winter behind us - and Spring here upon us - We are enjoying slightly-cool but lovely sunny weather! I think I might have even seen a little sprag or two of some green out there this morning on a tree!

And I have a confession to make - Remember that lil' post on Saturday about my love and addiction for Cadbury Creme Eggs - there was one starring at me - sitting on my desk - and I was promising myself to wait just one more day - to enjoy it on Easter - ha! It didn't last not one hour after I posted! (smiles)

Women's Body Image Anthology Wants to Hear From You

Share Your Story - Phat Girls Anthology - Call for Submissions:

Phat Girls Anthology will explore plus size women's private and public journeys with weight. In this original collection, we will express our diverse experiences and memories of how our weight and self/body image have shaped us as women - from childhood to adulthood.

Phat Girls Anthology will illuminate the successes achieved and the challenges met by women negotiating a desire for self-love and acceptance of our selves/bodies within an often “thin obsessed” and “thin accessible” society.

We all have diverse paths and histories, cultures, relationships and ambitions, but one thing most of us do in the morning is look at ourselves in the mirror! Phat Girls is interested in your story - what YOU see, think, hear or imagine when YOU look at your fabulous you. Who do you see looking back and what message(s) does she give you about how to live your life? Who to live your life with or for?

What message(s) does your self-image give you on how to navigate through your community as a female, student, professional, an occupant of public spaces for instance on the public transit, at a restaurant, a social or at a movie theatre? The spaces and roles we occupy in our lives are endless! What messages do we get from society (or from those negative nagging voices in our own minds) about how we should look and about how to achieve ‘real’ success? How do all of these factor into our perceptions of our bodies?

There is no one story that rings true for all of us and this is exactly what Phat Girls will capture. It’s a platform for you to tell your story, to share your ups and downs in the hopes that maybe your words might inspire another woman to share her own. Through sharing there is healing and more so empowerment! Phat Girls contributors will reflect the stories of women from different race, class, ability, sexual identity, religious, geographical and education backgrounds.

Secret Addictions

Okay - I admit - I have a secret addiction for these little eggs! It's something I cannot help - Ohh the outer chocolate shell is so yummy and the inside ooey-gooey treat inside is just as delicious!

I have loved these ever since I could remember finding them in my Easter basket and falling in love with them - I can remember when I was little - shuffling through my entire easter basket just to find these little eggs buried in the grass - They were always the very first thing I grabbed and quickly unwrapped and enjoyed - meanwhile I can recall my Mom asking me what else was in my Easter basket - "I don't know Mom - I'm enjoying my egg and will get to it later" - There was nothing that could compare to those succulent Cadbury Creme Eggs! - I remember my brother always reached for his white chocolate bunny - Not me - give me my eggs! It is (by far) my favorite Easter treat!

I wait - with anticipation - every year for them to come out - And I always tell myself that I am going to hoard some away for later - for after Easter when they are no longer selling them in the stores - But you know - it hasn't happened yet - ha! I am hooked - In fact, I am looking at one starring at me right now - sitting proudly on my desk - and I am resisting all temptation - I promised myself to wait until Easter tomorrow to enjoy my very last one - ohh the temptation!

And then just when I thought I was the only one crazy in love with these eggs - I saw a debate on Squidoo - Peeps or Cadbury Creme Eggs - I had a blast on this page - Come to find out - their are Peeps lovers, too! - what a fun page - So if you have a secret love for either Peeps or Cadbury Creme Eggs - be sure to visit the debate page and voice your opinion!

So - how about you? Peeps or Cadbury Creme Eggs? Or is it something else?

To Make a Difference

I received an email yesterday from a lady who was compelled to write me a very deep and emotional email - We've never met - never spoken before - She emailed me through my website - I was very touched by her story - She told me that she is a single mother and has a 7 year old daughter - she went on to tell me what she makes an hour and what she does for a living and she explained how difficult it is both financially and emotionally - that times we're so tough for her - She said her clothing budget is zilch - she has tried shopping at the Goodwill but she never seems to find plus size items - and for work she wears one pair of basic black pants and just changes out the tops but washing them so often causes them to wear out so quickly -

And then she said something that was so powerful and that got me thinking deeper - she said - "there aren't alot of options for plus-size poor women" - she is so very right! There is nothing out there for women in her situation and I am sure she is not alone - I am personally trying to help her - But another way I am hoping to help and expand on that is just by word of mouth and sharing this post with every woman I know - If we all just had one item in our closet that perhaps does not fit anymore or maybe has some slight flaw that we do not wear but is still in good usable condition - If each one of us sent just one or two plus-size clothing items to our local charity for women - how much of an impact that would have as a whole - There are many women in her situation and equally there are many women in a situation where they may have one or two items they can part with and donate to help - This is my hope and this is my wish.

While I was very saddened by her email - It was very emotional to read and heartbreaking - I was also taken back by her ability to be a strong woman and a Mom who keeps on pushing every day - She was very vulnerable and yet so strong - she said - "when you’re a parent you can’t be ashamed to ask for help" - through all of her financial and emotional termoil and heartache - what a very strong woman she is - Women are so resilient and strong in nature!

Warm Welcome to Spring

Ahhh Spring - it's officially here - and I am happy as a bee floating on a fragrant flower - Time for all these bare winter trees to bloom up and colors to start popping up everywhere - Although it's the first day of Spring - we are still pretty cool here in the beautiful Northeast - In fact - we even still have a bit of snow on the ground in some areas where their were big piles of snow - It looks like we are in for cooler temps all week long but I sense we will get warmed up after this week and we will sail through into Spring sunshine - I always enjoy winter - love the snow - But once we've enjoyed a few pretty snowstorms - I am ready for Spring!

This coming weekend I plan to go through my closets and dressers and begin to pack away all of my warm winter clothing for another year - There is something refreshing about going through and clearing out your winter clothes and packing them all away - It's almost like getting a brand new wardrobe when I bring out and discover all of my Spring and Summer clothing that I've temporarily forgotten about - I guess that has something to do with that ole saying of Spring being a time for renewal - Not just in nature - but in other areas, too!

Fun and Flirty - Spring Babydolls

I'm not sure there is a cuter - more flattering and fun style for Spring than the always-curvy puckered babydoll - These have always been a personal favorite of mine - spaghetti straps on the shoulders add to the cuteness and also give you a bit more comfort knowing it's not coming down - and so very figure-flattering on the mid-section and hips - If you're feeling a bit flirty - these are longer in length so you also have the added benefit of wearing as a short babydoll dress, too! - These are so cute with leggings - Very pretty and a "must have" for your curvy girl Spring wardrobe!

Eye on Tatiana Intimates

Our fine line of Tatiana Intimates offer several high-quality points that are unique to the line and found in no other brand and it are these specific high-quality points why we proudly offer the Tatiana line of plus-size bras at Kathy's Curvy Corner.

Tatianas euro-lite support system for underwire bras was developed exclusively by them and gives their bras a clear advantage in comfort n' fit - which provides desired support that has been streamlined to give just the right amount of flexibility with a wire that is lighter and thinner.

To ensure superiority of the Tatiana euro-lite system - one more step was taken - the advantage of a fully nylonized wire - This is very unique to Tatiana bras - other wires are bare or partially nylonized which leads to corrosion and staining on the fabric - fully nylonized wire deliver much more comfort and washability to your bra - And, we agree!

Color matched metal sliders - Many of the sliders and fasteners on Tatiana bras are metal - not plastic - so they will hold up better in the wash - They are also color matched to the fabric! We love this feature!

Tired of having your underwire pop out? Tatiana bras are made with double bartacks which prevents this from happening - Ahh, this is a very nice touch!

European sewing - components - and fabrication - All of the seamstresses at Tatiana have completed a two-year seamstress course - an advantage you will not find anywhere else which makes a noticeable difference in the final product - Tatiana seamstresses take great pride in their work - In short - Tatiana intimates are built around this pride of workmanship and it shows in superior washability - support and comfort.

Color match between fabrics - Attention to detail is what makes Tatiana bras look so rich - You can see this in the color match between different types of fabrics in your bra - Very unique and we appreciate this feature!

To Floral or Not to Floral

... that is the question! - My answer - Absolutely! Regardless of what you've heard before - it is perfectly acceptable for curvy ladies to wear pretty floral prints - The key to wearing florals is the size of the bloom and the spacing between the blooms - Larger blooms with lots of background showing looks best - A perfect example is our newest design in a very classy black and white print with a stunning red floral - Absolutely fabulous!
